New Website for Lancashire's Young People's Service
Young people in Lancashire can now log onto a brand new website developed just for them by Lancashire County Council's Young People's Service.
The new site – www.lancashire.gov.uk/yps - which launched last week, provides information on a huge range of things to do, places to go and people to talk to, all across the county.
The new site has over 1500 different activity categories to choose from. Everything from rock climbing to a rock concert; from local youth clubs to local scout groups; all on a site which is quick and simple to access and navigate – making it easier than ever for young people to find exactly what they want.
County Councillor Mark Perks, cabinet member for young people, said: "I'm sure that this great new site will be invaluable for young people looking for things to do and places to go where they live. I try to get out and see as much of our youth provision as possible so it will also help me plan my diary!"
Information matters
The new site is part of Lancashire County Council's drive to ensure young people have access to information on a range of opportunities available to them. The site provides information on a wide range of social and development opportunities, as well as information advice and guidance for young people aged 11-25.
What makes the new site so different - it is believed to be the most advanced site offered by a local authority anywhere in the country - is the inter-connection between its different parts and the ability for young people to personalise the site to meet their specific information needs.
Not only can young people get information on what's on in their area – which can be located either by post code or town - they can also find out what it costs, when it's on and if they are old or young enough to join. They can also find out how to get there – on foot, by car, bus or train - and how long it will take!
As you would expect, the site includes information on activities and centres run by the Young People's Service - some centres can even be viewed using the new 360 degree video footage. Importantly it also includes both groups and clubs from the private, voluntary communities and faith sectors, with links and listings for over 3000 organisations, and more being added all the time.
Fantastic features
The site boasts some fantastic new features, which make it even easier for young people to use once they sign up as members.
On registration, they can select the information they get, so that they get auto-alerts on the activities or clubs they are interested in. The VIP Guest List section allows young people to find out in advance what's on at the weekend, whilst the Feedback facility ensures every young person can give their honest opinion on an activity they have been to. Perfect for spreading the word about something really good and great feedback for providers on how to improve their services, if they need to.
Ask the audience
The site is the culmination of two years of development work by the Young People's Service Information and Access team who worked with young people to get advice on how the site should look, what it should contain and how it should work.
